For years the worst part of buying something from abroad was the ambush. You pay for the thing. You wait for the thing. Then a courier turns up on your doorstep asking for eighteen more pounds before he will let go of the box, like a debt collector who took a wrong turn.
On 24 August, Shopify Managed Markets takes that ambush away. It is ending DDU, the setup where the duty is a surprise the customer settles on delivery, and moving every affected store to DDP, where the duty is collected at the checkout instead. If you do nothing, you are moved for you.
Here is the part most merchants will miss.
The doorstep ambush is genuinely worth killing. It is the single biggest reason a cross-border parcel gets refused at the door and a review gets typed in all caps. Nobody has ever loved paying the courier. Good riddance.
But the duty did not vanish. It moved house. It used to arrive later, dressed as somebody else’s problem. Now it sits inside your checkout total, in your handwriting, on the same product at the same price, in every market that switched, on the same morning.
That is not a tax setting. That is a price rise. And price rises move conversion.
So watch the one number that matters. Add-to-cart to purchase, in your DDU markets, across the switch. If it dips, you are not being punished. You are finally seeing what the sale actually cost, the bit the courier used to hide from you on the doorstep.
Most stores will let the switch happen and never look. They will feel a little poorer in September and blame the weather.
The change is not really about duty. It is about who has the awkward conversation, the courier or your checkout. For the first time, it is you.
