How to stop overselling across Shopify and marketplaces. Your last sofa is in three shop windows.

Every guide to overselling ends at the same till. Buy a sync app. Hold back a couple of units. Done.

Sync is fine. It is also not the fix.

Picture your last sofa sitting in three shop windows at once: your own site, Amazon and eBay. Sync is the assistant running between the windows, taking the sign down after each sale. On a quiet Tuesday he strolls. On Black Friday he is still wedged in the first doorway while two more people pay for the same sofa. Sync lags hardest at exactly the moment you are selling fastest, which happens to be the only moment overselling ever occurs.

So stop asking how fast the assistant runs. Ask which window you can afford to disappoint.

Here is the part most sellers miss. A cancelled order does not cost the same everywhere. On eBay, cancelling because an item is out of stock counts as a defect on your seller account, and enough defects drag down your seller standing and the visibility that comes with it. Other marketplaces keep their own version of that scorecard. On your own site, a cancellation is an apology email, a new delivery date and, handled well, a customer who remembers you were decent about it.

That changes where the buffer lives. A flat “hold back two everywhere” treats every window as equal. They are not. Pull the last few units off the marketplaces first, where a mistake leaves a mark on the account, and let your own site sell right down to zero, where a mistake costs a polite email.

Then size the buffer from your own numbers, not a round one from a vendor blog. Take how many units you sell during one sync gap in your busiest hour. If your sync runs every fifteen minutes and you shift eight an hour at peak, two units can sell twice before any other window hears about it. That is your buffer, and it needs raising before November, not after.

Overselling is not a software problem. It is a decision about which customer gets the apology, and it is far cheaper to make it now than to let a marketplace scorecard make it for you in December.
