Every guide to marketplace ads assumes you are on Amazon

Search for how to run sponsored products and you will get Amazon. Every result, every time, as though the rest of retail quietly shut up shop and went home.

Plenty of us are not on Amazon. We are on retailer marketplaces, the ones running on Mirakl and its cousins, sitting behind department store names. The ad tools there look familiar enough to lull you, and then behave nothing like the guide you just read.

Here is what is genuinely different, and it mostly works in your favour.

The auction is small. On Amazon you are bidding against the entire planet and a thousand sellers of the same white lamp. On a retailer marketplace you are bidding against the handful of sellers that retailer approved for your category, which is a very different room. Thin auctions are cheap auctions. A budget that would vanish without trace on Amazon can hold a category here, and categories on these platforms are small enough to genuinely own.

The catalogue still gates everything. Sponsored placements amplify listings the platform already understands, so bidding on a half-filled listing is hiring a megaphone for somebody with laryngitis. Fill the attributes first. The ads are the second job, never the rescue.

Then the trap. On several of these platforms the bulk campaign upload replaces your campaign set rather than adding to it. Paste in ten campaigns and what you pasted is now the whole account. Everything you left out of the file is not sitting quietly in the background, it is gone. Export what exists, edit that file, upload the edited version. Never paste a fresh sheet and hope.

And your instruments are dimmer. The search term reporting is thinner than Amazon’s, so you steer on placement and product performance and you check it more often than you would like.

Marketplace advertising is not one skill you learn once on Amazon. It is a different room in every building, and the cheapest rooms are the ones nobody has written the guide for yet.
